GUS THE WONDER CAT…

Gus The Wonder Cat

...Gus The Wonder Cat, our six year old Pixie–bob, sleeps all day but patrols the house all night looking for anything that is amiss. Now, that worked out just fine for several years. However, recently on a hot summer night he found the patio door open and in great panic came racing into the bedroom calling loudly for someone to take notice.

Gus The Wonder Cat usually has such a soft meow that I have to do a “lip reading thing” to find out what he wants. However, on the night of the open patio door he was so loud that I thought there was a strange cat in the house, and when his loud persistent yowling didn’t get me out of my deep sleep fast enough, he started running rapid and repeated laps up and over the bed.

By this time, he had me up staggering around trying to find out if we had an intruder, a fire or just what the heck was going on. As Gus repeatedly showed me the open door, I finally realized what the trouble was. I remembered all the stories of cats finding their way back to their owners after being lost or actually waking and saving their owners from a house fire. So, as a good pet owner, I praised him over and over making a great fuss about his “good job”.

Gus The Wonder Cat is a quick study and shortly after the patio door episode he decided that he didn’t need to carry on his nightly vigil alone. He now knew that with the correct motivation from him, he could have me up and about to keep him company. So now, on a nightly basis, he tries all of his best moves to get me up. It only took me about a month or so to figure out that all his yowling and running laps over the bed were him “crying wolf” as it were.

Since, I’m not getting much sleep at night, I’ve started taking naps with Gus The Wonder Cat, which he doesn’t seem to mind at all. In the mean time I’m madly searching the web for ways to disarm an Alarm Cat aside from throwing shoes at him.

FYI The Bearded One has slept soundly through it all. Only when he reads this will he know the fun he has missed out on.
