Those Panic Moments
Health emergencies are always a panic, whether it is you, a family member or your pet (sometimes it is hard to tell which is which). This is even more so, if you are visiting or traveling away from familiar territory.
So, we are going to talk about emergency healthcare facilities, complete with maps to help you in your moment of need. See Mixed Bag - Health emergencies.
Let me tell you about our experience with a "panic moment": Our Pixie-Bob, Gus the cat, was just a year old and still not very wise, as the Bearded One had sheltered him from the real world, something awful.
One nice July evening, Gus came dragging himself home in great despair. His hind-quarters were paralyzed and only by sheer willpower, was he able to make it up the neighbor's driveway, through the garden gate, and around the house to the patio door.
Since he has long fur on his stomach and heavy fur on his back, we could see no obvious injuries. However, it took only one look at the poor little guy to know something dreadful had befallen him. His pitiful crying left no doubt we must take quick action.
I picked him up in a towel, while the Bearded One got the car door open for us. Even though it was about 6:30 PM, or so, we had no idea where to go. Hoping someone might be working late at our regular veterinarian's office, we headed there.
Now, you might ask why we did not stop and check the yellow pages or the internet for emergency veterinarian services. I do not know -- there just wasn't a cool head among us.

We arrived at our veterinarian's office (did I mention it was a Friday and by now pushing 7: PM) to find it obviously closed. However, when the Bearded One went to BANG on their door, he noticed a sign with the name and address of an emergency animal hospital open 24/7, located in our area. We didn't even know there was a 24/7 emergency animal hospital in Seattle. With our poor little Gus still crying in distress, and the Bearded One trying to figure out the best way to get to the address, there was panic on all sides.
We arrived at the Animal Critical Care and Emergency Services, took Gus in and were told that there was a rash of injured animals already there and waiting, but they would get Gus in right away. He was triaged, given pain medication and since all the oxygen units were already in use, they made an oxygen tent for Gus out of a clear plastic storage bin.
Later, when he was shaved, examined and x-rayed, we were told the fur on his stomach had saved him from being disemboweled. Something had grabbed him (dog, coyote, etc.) and savagely shook him before he was able to escape. He had only a couple of small puncture wounds on his back but he was badly bruised the entire length of his underside. The attack had also left him with a partially collapsed lung. He was lucky to be alive.
After four days in the hospital and many more $$$$ later, Gus was able to come home and complete his recovery.
Gus is still repaying us for the time, money, and energy we put out during his "hour of need". On a regular basis (even this very morning) he brings us, wood rats, field mice, voles, and moles, plus the occasional bird. Most we are able to rescue before he plays them to exhaustion and relocate them into various unsuspecting neighbors' yards.

FREE STUFF FOR YOU TO DO
The price of gas!!! The price of almost everything else!! Vacation time!! Kids out of school!! What to do??
Do not despair; a little creative planning with Belva's List may help you salvage your summer.
The things we suggest are activities and places to go you probably already know about that are in your own neighborhood and beyond. However, with all you are trying to juggle just now, it is easy to go into a mental lock down mode.
You live in an end-destination vacation area, people travel from around the world to visit this great place. If the current economic woes have caused you to consider shortening or canceling your vacation do not be disheartened, this doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing.
The "Center of the Universe" for free stuff surrounds you. Many free, interesting, enjoyable and even educational experiences await you. Just take a moment or two, too cruise Belva's List and find what suits your fancy.
We have free music concerts in local parks and elsewhere. We have free walking, hiking, biking, and skating trails almost everywhere. We have free beaches, waterfronts, and lakeshores, these often have free activities and entertainment for your enjoyment. Most of our museums have free days and times for you to visit. There are art museums, art and glass blowing galleries, nationally recognized museums, ethnic museums, fantastic gardens, both indoor and out, and museums of flight -- all of which have those free times I mentioned. Do not forget churches, local libraries and the YMCA/YWCA, all of which have facilities and activities, many of which are also free. Take your kids and the neighbor kids, pack a lunch or Hobo/Campfire Dinner and be off.
You do remember the Hobo/Campfire Dinner from your childhood, don't you? In double foil, layer some hamburger, potatoes, carrots, onions, and seasoning. Wrap tightly, and put in a cooler with the cold drinks until cooking time. By the way, the kids can help with the preparation.
Many local parks and beaches have covered places set up with picnic tables, barbeque grills and acres of grass or sand for tossing that frisbee and working up an appetite.
Be sure to allow plenty of time for your Hobo/Campfire Dinner to cook completely, as we want no Salmonella, etc. to mar your outing. Now pull yourself together and choose some places and events, make this summer happen in a good way.
Have a Great Time and Bon Apatite

Up With The Arlington Fly-In!
Guest Blogger: Wash Phillips
What brings humans together, by the multi-thousands just to celebrate artifical flight? That "Gatering of Eagles" (and earthbound spectators) makes a remarkable travel destination, a transient yet permanent attraction.
Arlington Fly-In 2008 (July 9-13) pulls together elements of a notable aviation affair. But curb appeal for you specifically depends on who you are:
- Pilot — genuine airplane driver now or sometime; head still in the clouds.
- Buff — reviews anything passing overhead (Boeing Dreamliner or a bumblebee); dreams of learning to fly OR has perfect excuse why not.
- Huh? — thinks anything smaller than a 747 or larger than a gooney bird is a "Piper Cub"; i.e., knows little is spellbound by things aerial (or accompanying someone who is).
Whichever is you, Arlington Fly-In 2008
Aiming for sky-high

Every aerial gathering has its own distinctive mood, appearance, signature. That's why they're such terrific destinations, even for non-pilots.
Arlington has its look and feel, too. A think slice off the watermelon that's summer aviation, cool in the heat. Rich with its own sweetness, this fruit swells with the co-mingled flavors of both airshow and fly-in.
If you're foggy on those distinctions, think opposite poles

The humble fly-in is a simple idea, alive all over America. Devotees of the sky agree to meet at a specifided airfield. Many fly there in personal aircraft, but hangers-on trail by auto, truckandmotorhome as well. It is a group thing, possibly dedicated to a particular type of aircraft or hailing from a certain georaphy. Activities might include arcana such as short landing contests or flour-bombing a grass target. Always inculed is admiring someone elses machine and breaking bread with fellow devotees: breakfasts are a warm tradition. Fly-ins, then, are traditionally for pilots, their family and friends, with a certain intimacy implied. And high likelyhood that some overnighters will camp under their plane's wings.
The airshow, by contrast, is a public affair, full of come-one, come-all spirit. It is an advertised spectacle of the bumper-sticker kind. And there could even be (some note archly) a bit of selling going on.
Arlington Fly-in 2008 is truly a hometown blend of both.
The Big Carnival

Arlington's sponsoring aegis is the Experimental Aircraft Association, originated 50-odd years ago to encourage plans or kit-built aircraft. But the Experimental Aircraft Association long ago made room in their collective hearts for restored vintage aircraft, warbirds, lightly-regulated ultralights and even factory-built birds. A new catagory of interest: Light Sport Aircraft promising fule-sipping engines, lower up-front costs and no physical exam required — just show them your Driver's License. Take time to check all these birds out.
A warbird, is any aircraft type that has seen national service — combat or not — for any nation any tiime since the Wright Brothers. The Arlington Air Show often melds ex-military aircraft with surplus military vehicles, each one their collectors' pride and joy. Elsewhere on the field are entertaining forums by former air-persons who flew those warbirds back when.
The many wings of fly-in aircraft are arayed in neat rows, some with tents tucked beneath. Possibly 100 plus forums by aviation leaders, FAA personnel, designers and others go on all 5 days. Overhead, engines of world-class aerobatic performers snarl for attention. The expanse of aviator goodies in the exhibit area is formidable.
The ultimate curb appeal just after dusk, family-rated feature films paint each night from a huge outdoor screen by the taxiway. With rugged mountaintops fading beyond, hundreds of visitors — usually serious ones come to camp — set out lawn chairs or spread a blanket in the grass to take in the entertainment.
This hybrid rocks

In the end, the Arlington Air Show is what it is. Fly-in. Airshow. Entertainment of many sorts. Like a Burger King creation, you can have it your way, if you have it at all. Arlington is a great place to hold a fly-in, and an enjoybale place to be outside for a weekend. There is always the chance a little military iron may zoom by at low altitude, as in years past. That's more curb appeal: pounding your chest like a space shot at canaveral. But plan to see for yourself, July 9-13 2008. Check out the official site at www.nweaa.org for prices and other information. Or hail for more details at 360 435 5857.
I attend every year, and I'm never disappointed.
My Most Embarrassing Moment

The Bearded One and I went to the Fremont Summer Solstice Parade this year. What a blow out affair that was. The abundance of floats, performers, and attendees is truly overwhelming. All of the pageantry, both in the parade and on the sidelines, is what has made this parade world famous. The sight of, there must have been a hundred or more, painted, decorated and nude persons streaming by on bicycles is enough to… well you just had to be there, hearing the “Ooh’s and Ahhs”.
Now, on to my moment… We had ridden the bus from Greenwood to Fremont. The bus stop is some little way up the hill from the heart of the activity.
After much viewing enjoyment, food and beverage, we started back up the hill to our bus stop. Just as we were getting close to our destination, I began to have a moment of personal panic.
As I was scanning the buildings along the sidewalk, in search of a restaurant, I spied a brick building with a storefront type window. Passing the window, I see there are small groups of people sitting around various small tables, others on couches and easy chairs; beverages and snacks available at various stations through out the room. This is the exact ambience one sees in a neighborhood coffeehouse, happy, friendly, cozy and full of people.
I am so relieved to find such a place as this, for now my moment of need is fast approaching the extreme panic stage. As I entered through the open front door, I spotted a slightly open bathroom door in the far corner, meaning the bathroom was not occupied. I nodded to people as I race in, trying to be as inconspicuous as possible.
Business done, I headed back the way I had come. As I reenter the room, everyone stood up, and wearing big smiles, began to clap, politely. Thinking, maybe I should have bought something on the way in, I got into my purse and left a dollar on the table full of snacks.

Upon exiting to the continuing round of applause, I found the Bearded One talking to a couple on the sidewalk, cups in hand, obviously customers of the establishment. That’s when I was informed this was not a neighborhood coffee shop but the apartment of the gentleman talking to the Bearded One. He was just hosting a group of friends celebrating the summer solstice. The Bearded One is still chuckling.
To the nice Gentleman, please accept my public apology for my great faux pax and my sincere thanks to you and your friends for being so gracious to a lady in distress.
Apologetically Yours

The Green Season is Here

The Bearded One and I decided we needed a pick-me-up after so much rain this late in the season. We thought of a day tour where the flowers are in bloom and Spring has sprung, so to speak. Do you know where to find the following? Elephant Foot, Ponytail, Ladies Mantel, Pink Marshmallow, Creeping Charlie, Red Spider, Royal Air Force, or a Moss Ball. Read on and you will guess the answers.
Seattle has wonderful greenhouse/nurseries with an abundance of plant varieties to choose from for your particular pocketbook and needs. Be sure to take plenty of time and don't forget the kids. Great fun can be had by all. We selected four different areas to tour and here is our report on a truly uplifting day.
Whether you are visiting our area or are one of our very own local residents, be sure to support our locally owned nurseries. A plant or a shrub is always a welcome gift.
Sky Nursery

Shoreline, WA 98133

From an Interview with Joe Abken:
Joe Abken considers his job at sky Nursery, "following his bliss" as he has had a passion for gardening ever since he was a child, working in the garden with his grandmother. Joe "moved to Seattle for love" about five years ago and worked for Sky Nursery periodically over the next few years. About two and a half years a go he went to work for Sky Nursery full time, and last year became the Greenhouse manager.
Sky Nursery began its life fifty-six years ago as a General Feed Store, supplying hay, grain, garden seeds and starts, and all manner of outdoor tools and supplies needed by the semi-rural residents of the time. The present owners are a brother and sister team, children of the original owners.
As time has moved on, the needs of the neighborhood have gradually changed. No more need for hay and grain, more interest in landscaping, bedding plants, and ready to plant vegetables and flowers.
Plans are well underway to start construction July 08 of a new, updated, more efficient operation and facility. The new facility will actively work to be ever more "green", using water recapture technology, and continuing and increasing the use of alternative herbicides and insecticides that are organic and therefore less toxic and have less long term environmental impact.
Sky Nursery is a gardening intense store and would like to be known as the "gardeners' gardening store". Their focus is on helping the gardener to find organic solutions to their gardening and landscaping problems.
Joe's vision for the future is that when the public thinks of Sky Nursery, they think of them from a green perspective. Sustainable landscaping can be achieved by looking to our native plant selection, with increased focus on water-wise plants and organic lawn care. the new facility will allow for an increase in organic visibility and understanding.
Many sustainable landscaping ideas can be enhanced by the use of bulk landscaping materials available at Sky Nursery. These materials, such as, bark, soil, gravel, sand, hardscape, and paver materials are available for both residential and commercial projects.

Molbak's is a perfect place for an outing with family or friends, lots of covered space, scads of wonderful and exotic plants to ponder. The Bearded One and I could hardly tear ourselves away from the orchids, by far the most extensive collection we have seen in years.

Belva & The Bearded One
STEP BOLDLY--STEP BRAVELY…
…INTO THE NEW YEAR!! As I make my New Years Resolutions List, I am making a to do list for each resolution that will move me forward to reaching my goal.
For instance, I need to be better organize my work on Belva's List. If Sunday evening, I list the things I need to get done during the coming week, I should be more efficient with my time during the coming week and better prioritize what needs to be done.
The Bearded One and I need to lose a few (or more) pounds. If I make up a weekly menu for meals and snacks and then buy those items on one shopping trip, maybe I won't be so tempted to buy junk food, comfort foods and already prepared meals. This should save money as well as keep extra calories out of the house.
The Bearded One and I need to get a regular exercise program going. We need to discuss this as I think it will help if we develop a plan were we can encourage and support each other. This is going to be the most difficult one for me to keep, as I am a big whinier when it comes to exercise.
Since The Bearded One and I work out of a home office, we tend to spend too much time working and do not get out and about enough. I resolve to plan and execute more DATE NIGHTS. As we review and add events to Belva's List, we often remark how much fun it would be to go and do this or that—but we seldom act on these thoughts (how sad is that).
The Bearded One works hours and hours on the computer, and as you other computer persons know, a computer can turn on its operator in a heart beat. This causes big swearing by The Bearded One. I'm think a penalty jar would maybe cut down on the bad words, but even better, it could pay for the Date Night mentioned above.
And last but not least, I resolve to write more blogs in 2011.
BOWLING BOWLING
NEIGHBORHOOD BOWLING!!! Some of my best holiday memories, as a child, are my parents taking my brother and me bowling. Since we lived on a farm, my parents were always busy during most of the year, so the only togetherness we had was doing farm kinds of things together. However, things were different come winter time, sooo as part of our holiday activities, they would take us bowling. Some times we could even get them to bowl a few lines and I can assure you, my brother and I had lots of laughs watching our parent throw a few gutter balls.
Bowling is great family activity. As a parent, I have taken the kids and some of their friends bowling, especially during the holiday season. In fact, I found bowling tickets to be great Christmas stocking stuffers.
SPIN ALLEY BOWLING CENTER*, http://www.spinalley.com, in Richmond Beach, just west of the Shoreline Fred Meyer's is a great facility, with bumper bowling for kids under 10 years old. Start your family tradition. GO BOWLING!!

HOLIDAY MUSIC--MUSIC--MUSIC
There is holiday music everywhere, no matter where you live, you are surrounded by music this month. It may be religious, or ho-ho-ho and jingle-jingle--jingle type music, but all the same, it will lift your spirits and make you smile.
You will find this music being performed at your children’s school, at your local college, at your neighborhood place of worship and on your downtown street corner, but where ever you find holiday music please stop, enjoy and appreciate the efforts of the performers. These performers put in many hours of practice to prefect their "gift of the season" for your enjoyment.
This last Saturday, The Bearded One and I, attended the SNO-KING COMMUNITY CHORALE'S presentation of their HOLIDAY MAGIC: A FAMILY AFFAIR musical. The music and story told were soul-lifting as well as an enjoyable conclusion to an other wise hectic week.
The SNO-KING COMMUNITY CHORALE has been invited to join with chorales from around the world to perform in a national premiere of KARL JENKENS' "GLORIA" at CARNEGIE HALL in NEW YORK, January 17, 2011. Soooo, friends and fans of Belva's List who live in the New York area or will be visiting there, do not miss a chance this great musical event.
SORRY I'VE NOT WRITTEN LATELY
TO FRIENDS AND FANS OF BELVA'S LIST. Sorry I haven't written to you lately. There was a death of an immediate family member. I know all of you understand how a thing like this can take the wind out of your sails. We have finally taken care of the immediate issues involved in this sad event.
The death of a family member or friend causes one to take a step back and contemplate the bigger picture and our own mortality. We are beginning to pick up the pieces of our lives and move forward. So, I will be back to posting blogs on a regular basis.
Thanks for your thoughts,
Belva and Family
SWANSON'S NURSERY
SWANSON'S NURSERY, *(spobla), located in the North Ballard/North Crown Hill of the general Seattle area. Saturday I stopped by to visit Curley, the camel, Moe, the little donkey, and Donner and Blitzen, the reindeer. http://www.swansonsnursery.com/
For the young and old, these delightful animals will brighten your day. Curley was lying down next to the fence so he did not have to get up to have you pet him or scratch his nose. According to the Swanson's staff, Curley has none of the bad habits that camels are reported to have. Moe was busy having a bit of lunch, but joined Curley as soon as there was an audience. The Reindeer were busy with lunch and weren't to interested in entertaining visitors. I think they were building up their strength for the work ahead.
I plan to go back to visit our xmas friends. Maybe, I can borrow a child with whom to share the moment. See you there.

I will be writing more blogs about what and where I'm spending my time. It probably will not come as a surprise to anyone to find that BELVA'S LIST is followed by The Bearded One coming in a close second. Just don't tell him this sad turn of events. Here's the Link: Belva's List Page
DATE NIGHT
The Bearded One and I had a great "date night" last evening at CASPER'S in Shoreline. CASPER'S had a first-rate musical duo who entertained diners with a "fusion" of easy listening, toe- tapping music.
After a long and tedious week, it was wonderful to feel the tension just melt away as Jonathan Rooke and Ben Livneh of FLIP & FLY worked their musical magic. As you all know, your dinner digests better when you are relaxed. The food and music was a welcome setting for families with younger children. Even better last night was an all you could eat catfish night.
I, for one, hope that CASPER has the FLIP & FLY duo back real soon.

CAMLANN MEDIEVAL VILLAGE & THE BORS HEDE INNE
ONE OF A KIND EXPERIENCE!!! Let Roger of Glastonbury, hosteler/innkeeper and his merry band of villagers at the CAMLANN MEDIEVAL VILLAGE give you a taste of ‘merry old England’ circa 1376. When I say taste that is just what I mean.
The Ye Bors Hede Inne is a delightful establishment that transports you back to a time and place that would have been a welcome sight along the roads of ‘merry old England’ of the 14th century. Establishments such as the Ye Bors Hede Inne, a place offering rest and refreshments were essential for the weary traveler of the time. The welcome from a friendly innkeeper, the warmth from the great fireplace, and the aroma of a savory meal awaited all who entered these roadside inns.
Theme dining experiences are a tradition for many a birthday, anniversary, social groups, etc. You have had your Star Wars, Gothic, Roaring Twenties and comic book character theme events, now is the time for something new—or should I say ‘olde’. The CAMLANN MEDIEVAL VILLAGE can be the location of your next or even first theme celebration.
You can work up an appetite with a stroll through the 14th century village while your meal is being prepared from the same recipes served to the nobles of the time. Complement your meal selection with mead, ale, beer or wine, or spiced juice for the teetotalers, while the resident minstrels entertain you with songs and stories of old England.
For you and your guests’ complete CAMLANN MEDIEVAL VILLAGE experience, there is a ‘clothier shoppe’ from which you may rent period costumes. Treat yourself, surprise your friends, and have a fun time all will remember.

SPIRITS…SPIRITUALITY…SPIRITS
The question of the day is; when in our world today do spirits and spirituality intersect? Three recent examples are All Saints Day, Halloween and El Dia de los Muertos, Mexico’s celebration of the Day of the Dead. The next couple months are filled with opportunity to explore our celebration of cultural as well as religious remembrances, should you be so inclined.

Inn At Queen Anne, Seattle, WA
Retreat…Retreat…Retreat…
…no, not the cavalry, I’m thinking writers, families, groups, or couples. You know… a place where you can get away from the usual, think deep thoughts and commune with other like minded people.
Believe it or not, located just across the street from Key Arena and the Seattle Center is a quaint, unique, charming and unpretentious little hotel that will meet your retreat needs. The historic Inn at Queen Anne has a quiet serenity that is soothing to the mind and soul.
The Inn at Queen Anne is all of the above and much, much more. Legend has it that the first residents of the Inn were, in fact, retirees from a religious order. The Inn's original design seems to bear out this legend, with two wings and a courtyard in the middle, perfect for men on one side and women on the other. Perhaps, this is where all that serenity comes from.
…and when you are through retreating, just step outside and all the wonders of Seattle are there for you to enjoy. The Seattle Center, Key Arena, the Space Needle, theatres, music venues, restaurants, museums, art studios and galleries, all just a short stroll away. A short public bus ride (most of it in the free zone) will take you to the Seattle Waterfront, Pike Place Market, more theatres, museums, restaurants…well, you get the idea… lots of things to do.
Should you and your group be looking for a new place to hold your next retreat, be sure to check out the Inn at Queen Anne. All rooms are furnished in a simple European style with a light airy touch that compliments the original design. All rooms have complete kitchenettes and all the modern amenities you will need to have a most enjoyable stay.
Weary traveler, out–of–town guests, local tourist, couple on a date night, traveling businessman, or friends looking to do a sleepover, check out the Inn at Queen Anne for their latest specials and packages they can offer you or your group.
The Bearded One and I plan to treat some of our out–of–town guests, coming for a family member’s graduation, to a stay at the Inn at Queen Anne.

Another Cheap Date In Shoreline, WA
Another Cheap Date…More Good Times
A mocha or a movie? Why not both? Recently, The Bearded One and I went on another “date night”. We chose to take in a movie at the Shoreline Crest Cinema ($3.00 per ticket) since the show we wanted to see was already filled up, we bought tickets for the next showing and looked around for a way to kill some time before our movie started.
…and behold, located just kitty-cornered from the theatre was Café Aroma. What a wonderful little treasure is this family owned espresso shop located in the Ridgecrest area of Shoreline.
Using locally roasted coffee beans for their wide variety of Coffee Drinks, Café Aroma also provides a nice selection of Pastry for your enjoyment. They offer a Soup of The Day and soon Sandwiches. If you like something cold, try a Fruit Smoothie or an Italian Soda. On nice days there are chairs and tables outside, along with inside seating which allows for a leisurely break in your otherwise hectic day.
Whether waiting for your movie to start, walking your dog, jogging, needed to get out of the house or you are visiting in or near the Ridgecrest neighborhood, you are blessed to have access to Café Aroma.
Rest assured The Bearded One and I will be back to Café Aroma and the Crest Cinema for another cheap date and more good times.

Skiing in Washington State
Is it too early to think skiing?…
…You may be saying to yourself, “But wait—this is only August… No! No! No! I cannot stand the pressure! I am still trying to plan for Labor Day.” And I will say to you, “Why wait to the last minute, like you usually do and miss all the good deals?”

Winter sports activities actually do take a touch more planning than, say, a day at the beach. There is more gear and more clothing, for one thing; but then you winter sport types already know the drill. And you realize, of course, early planning can help with that pesky budgeting process through the fall and winter seasons. Now is the time to start thinking early-bird sales, before they are all picked over or just plain over. Watch for those neighborhood winter-sports equipment swap meets. This is where skis, snowboards, boots, coats and all that fleecy, warm, winter-ware are readily available for trade or purchase. Do not forget to scout out the thrift stores, consignment shops, Craig’s List and the odd yard/garage sale.

For the family with growing children (or those of you who only ski occasionally), check out equipment rental stores. Maybe you just want to give skiing a try or your children are not sure whether skiing or snowboarding is their cup of tea. Seasonal rentals sure beats tripping over all that equipment for a year or two while your children make up their minds exactly what is their true winter-sport calling.
Should you plan to stay a night or a week, start calling places of lodging as early as possible and allow for some flexibility in your schedule. This could mean the difference between “Yes, we can” or “No, we can not afford this trip.”
Maybe you’re a spur-of-the-moment person. This can actually work in your favor, as both the ski resort and the lodging folks may have specials, due to last-minute cancellations or vacancies that could dovetail with your plans.

Be sure to study the ski resort websites, as each has different requirements and options available. Just because one package deal might break the bank does not mean they all will; the next package you find might fit your budget perfectly.
Here at Belva’s List, check out Mixed Bag (Outdoor Sports), for a brief overview of our area’s ski resorts. There you will find a map link and a direct internet link to each resort’s website.
Enjoy, keep warm and be safe,

The Underrated Bed & Breakfast Getaway

To The Bearded One and me, a “getaway” means just the two of us spending time together and enjoying each other’s company in a relaxing setting. The good times we all expect and look forward to on our vacations are available in all sorts of places. So for us, there are at least four kinds of Bed & Breakfast Getaways.
The first…is a long weekend with the in-laws, the outlaws or just the plain old law. These getaways may or may not be connected with a good time.
The second…is the traditional Bed & Breakfast we all picture as that Victorian mansion, lovely cottage on the beach, or retreat in the mountains. In all of these settings, someone else’s in-laws treat you like beloved, long-lost family. Or at least minor nobility.

Upon your arrival, you are transported into a world of cosmopolitan extravagance, tranquil comfort or rustic luxury (yes, there is such a thing)…or not. Whichever you choose, the beds will be piled high with feather comforters and pillows, and the towels will be the fluffiest you have seen in some time.
Your breakfast will be served with style and grace, plentiful enough to tide you over until dinner time. And just before you retire for the evening, there will be freshly baked cookies and cold/warm milk (or an alternate beverage of your choice).

The third…Bed & Breakfast is for the hail and hardy types, especially this time of year. It’s camping. Though a fall or winter camping trip requires a bit more planning, it can still be relaxing, refreshing and romantic—there’s a lot to be said for two people conserving body heat.
As for the breakfast-in-bed part, the only way The Bearded One could get me to go along with this insane plan is by serving me breakfast in the pup tent, while I am still in our sleeping bag.
The fourth…and perhaps most overlooked Bed & Breakfast experience can be found in hotels/inns, especially the smaller, more-intimate boutique hotels. You can choose the ambiance that meets your fancy and fits your budget. These particular Bed & Breakfast getaways offer you as much or as little privacy as you desire, and memories to last a lifetime.
You can have all your meals delivered to your room or wander down to the in-house restaurant and enjoy a meal in a quiet corner while you plan your day. Or, there are often quaint restaurants close by for your dining pleasure should you so choose. A sightseeing tour of the neighborhood helps you work up an appetite and make that meal taste even better.
You’re probably saying this is not, by definition, an actual Bed & Breakfast. So what? Neither is camping. But if you can share with your partner the same kinds of relaxed enjoyable good times as in the other venues, who cares about the details.

As described, Bed & Breakfast opportunities are found in every hamlet, village, town or city. So try out different locations. Each establishment offers a unique experience with people who genuinely enjoy the opportunity to offer their hospitality and share with you what is special about their little corner of the world.
Give one of these a try, and enjoy!

Redmond/Woodinville Wine Country

Sniff, Swirl, Sip…
Let it be wine, wine, wine. But where are we doing all of this sniffing, swirling, and sipping? Italy? France? Spain? Australia? No, no, no! We are in Washington State, USA.
Big wineries with lots of glamour, glitz, gadgets, bus tours, summer concerts and tasting rooms, are all part of the Washington wine scene. These well-established wineries are the granddames of the state wine industry. They fought the early battles of government rules and regulations. They hung in there while the public learned to say “Washington wine” without a curl of the upper lip or an over-the-shoulder sneer. Now Washington competes proudly with vintages from around the world.
One offshoot of all this hard-earned recognition is the opportunity for a small new group of Western Washington wine makers to emerge, with a mind of their own. These new vintners produce wines with provocative names like Gun Metal Red, Sinner’s Punch (red or white), Wilderness Red, Evil Twin, Outlaw Merlot, and even wines titled after Pearl Jam songs.
Being of the “with a little help from my friends” mindset and an “I’m doing it my way” attitude, these artisans are drawn to an industrial park on the outskirts of Woodinville. “Hoodinville,” they fondly call their wine-making corner of the world. There’s even a “godfather” of this new-found ‘hood, credited with being the inspiration to these new and upcoming entrepreneurs and oenophiles. His name: Mark McNeilly.
McNeilly is not your typical godfather—of winemaking or anything else. Don’t get me wrong: Mark is a far-sighted leader in Western Washington’s burgeoning small winery business. Who else would have the chops (and cojones) to name an early Bordeaux-style blend Dead Horse or a Pinot Noir, Black Love (after an album by The Afghan Whigs music group)? Mark’s “overnight success”—following 8-plus long, hard years of trial and error, naturally—makes him the go-to guy for those just getting started in the biz. Now, that fits my idea of the perfect godfather, with observable results.
On any given fall weekend, just take a drive to Woodinville and see for yourself. As you cross the railroad tracks in rapt anticipation and motor along 142nd Avenue NE, watch for the roadside sandwich boards heralding your entry into this realm of truly eclectic wine tasting. Most likely, your vintner of choice is on hand personally to describe his journey to this current acme of beverage creation. It’s sure to be a story of passion for the art of wine making, struggle, extreme hard work, personal and family sacrifice, and certainly pride in the wine you are by then sniffing, swirling and sipping. And, he hopes, buying.
Any of these so-called Hoodinville wines make a great conversation piece as a gift or an addition to your table. They speak great things about judgment and insight into the Washington wine world, always an expression of (your) good taste!
Here’s to SNIFF, SWIRL, SIP…

Zackys Custom Rods, Seattle, WA
It is always the season to give.
From a small auto body shop to be found on Aurora Avenue North, Seattle, there flows an unexpected river of compassion. It washes over kids of the Pacific Northwest who come to Children’s Hospital for treatment of life-threatening health concerns.
Along with the usual repairs of damaged vehicles, Keith Wong of A + N Aurora Body & Paint shows a talent and a passion for designing custom motorcycles. Such bikes are commonly called “choppers” and maybe some other names best not mentioned here.
Keith’s creations are specifically known as “Zackys Custom Rods” or on the street as just plain “Zackys.” However, I’m here to tell you there is nothing plain about a custom-built Zackys. And even though each bike is unique, Keith’s are easily recognized at any biker gathering, admired for their plain, clean, timeless lines.
Keith was born in China. He tells me, “The opportunity to come here, to work hard, and live beyond my childhood dreams makes me want to give others a chance at a future.” After building Zackys prized by paying clientele, Keith realized how he could “give back.” With a little help from his friends, he resolved to create a custom Zackys and donate it to a fund-raiser for the Seattle Children’s Hospital.
Several years later, the result was noted in the magazine V-Twin Motorcycles, December, 2008 issue, in an article entitled “V-Twin Gala and Auction Bike.” The piece stated, “For three years running, Zackys Custom Rods has served as a featured sponsor of the annual Children’s Ride benefiting Seattle’s Children’s Hospital.” The affair is notable as the largest charity motorcycle event in the Pacific Northwest.
Now every year, Keith and friends build an original cycle for their favorite charity. Their goal is to have a $1 million weekend fund-raiser for the Hospital. Many bike industry celebrities, fired up by Keith’s example and urging, contribute their own efforts, hoping to make the 2009 V-Twin Gala and Auction the one that hits the million-dollar mark.
When Keith delivers his classy new motorcycle to be donated to the Children’s Hospital, many of the children are on hand to have their picture taken on the new Zacky. For some, it’s a dream of what might be…
This is an open invitation by Keith and friends to bike builders and cycle enthusiasts around Puget Sound to join in this remarkable effort, aimed at helping kids have a future.
...every child deserves a dream.
Belva & The Bearded One
Seattle's Waterfront…

…is the place where The Bearded One and I go to take stock of our life and times. Whatever the weather or season, a walk from the Olympic Sculpture Park at the north end of the Waterfront to the Ferry Terminals at the south end and back to the Sculpture Park is more than enough time to allow us to sort things out.
It clears the mind to watch the activities on Elliott Bay. The who, what, and where of all that water traffic can set your mind adrift (I mean this in a good way). Seattle is such a young city, as major cities go, and the fact is there are still many buildings along the waterfront that are the originals, built by Seattle’s first businessmen only two or three generations ago. However, you should look now as they are being replaced by progress.
If I walk briskly, without grumbling for most of the way, The Bearded One treats me to a nosh at one of the many dining spots along the way. There is coffee and pastry, fish and chips, a steaming cup or bowl of clam chowder, ice cream in a waffle cone, hotdog or a hamburger with fries, or a full course dinner to choose from. We can sit inside or out depending on the weather or take it to go. We can stop by a lamp lined oasis of a park with a waterfront fountain, viewing platforms, picnic tables, and benches.
So much for brisk walking, we stroll in and out of converted waterfront warehouses and find merchants who have shops filled with freshly made candies, jams & jellies, and other Washington products, from both land and sea. There are shops with specialty clothing items, jewelry, collectables, souvenirs, and memorabilia from near and far.
Along the way there are museums, an aquarium, more shops beckoning us to come in and browse a bit, perchance even stop to visit, and multiple kiosks to book our water travel desires either local or foreign (Canada).
Just maybe, we will make a night of it and stay at one of the hotels located along the waterfront, after dark we can have a glass of wine and watch the lights from the ferries and other water traffic dance across the water.
Let’s just forget all about that brisk walking idea, ok.

Cheap Date…A Good Time

Recently, The Bearded One bought tickets to “an evening of scenes and monologues by David Mamet” presented by the Drama Department of Shoreline Community College. We decided to make attending this production part of a “date night”. We had an early dinner at the Boom Noodle (see Belva's Picks).
The actors from SCC did Mamet proud. The Bearded One and I have seen other productions by this fine group of actors and are never disappointed by either content or presentation. Director Tony Doupé has encouraged this group of actors to find their muse and expand their abilities and talents. We look forward to attending any of their presentations. Talk about a good deal, for a “nickel and a pickle”, you can be entertained for an entire evening.
The Puget Sound Area abounds with High Schools and Community Colleges whose Drama and Music Departments can use your interest and support. Check out your neighborhood newspaper or poster in your local grocery store notifying the public of an upcoming performance. Better than that, if you are willing to be a volunteer, you can probably score a few free tickets so you can treat your family to an evening out.
Do not let these economic times keep you from being a hero to your family and local school or community college.

Let Me Introduce You To My Blog
First, I should confess to you that three months ago I didn't know what a blog was. Sheila, who knows everything about blogs, told me it was taken from the internet term "web log". Well now, that certainly cleared that up... NOT. So, I've gotten over that hurdle. Now, I didn't say I understood it, I just got over it.
I blog, you blog, I'm told almost all God's children (and old folks) blog. If I can blog on your blog, that's good. If you can blog on my blog, even better. I'm told, you would then be my guest blogger and I yours. Great! Contact me and we will see what we can work out, maybe while we're at it, you can give me some blogging pointers.
My blogging goals are to give first hand impressions of various and sundry people, places and things. Some will be from me, however most will have input from the Bearded One. Others will be the result of interviews. And some will be from our guest bloggers, on God only know, what subjects.
Although, I can type with some small speed and accuracy, I'm still afraid of my keyboard and its connection to the internet. Therefore, I prevail up on the Bearded One with lots of promises, of one kind or another, to do my entry work and answer my emails. However, promises not withstanding, he is pushing me toward internet fulfillment. Oh, but I do love my #3 yellow pencil and legal pad.
