Professional indoor lacrosse has come to the Puget Sound, Everett’s Comcast Arena to be exact. Professional indoor lacrosse combines the physical, rough and tumble play of hockey with the high scoring, fast pace and play-making style of basketball. Pacific Lutheran football has a rich tradition, fostered by four national championships in eight title-game appearances since 1980.

Since becoming an NCAA Division III member in 1998, the Lutes have advanced to postseason play four times. In 1999, Pacific Lutheran became the only team in Division III history to win five straight road games on the way to a national championship in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. Prior to joining the NCAA, the PLU football program made 15 NAIA postseason appearances and won championships in 1980, 1987 and 1993.

What? You’ve never heard of the Seattle Majestics football team? You don’t know what you’re missing!

The Majestics were undefeated in regular season play two years running. No, that’s not a misprint: 16 & 0.

And get this. The Seattle Majestics are a women’s football team. Most of them never played football in school because it wasn’t allowed. But I am here to tell you, they play football! And I don’t mean “Powder Puff” football; this is “knock-‘em down and drag-‘em out” smash nose football.

They are now playing home games at their new digs, French Field in Kent. So far this season, they are winless but the season isn't over and their fans love them anyway. And I guarantee, if you take time to see them play, you will be a fan, just like me and everybody else that’s gone to a Majestics game.

Expect no big money players; in fact, these women actually buy their own equipment. And no high-salaried coaches, either; the Majestics’ head man last showed ‘em how in the Pop Warner Leagues. But the Majestics have heart, and they play the game because they love it. This is a great way to spend an afternoon, and it’s kid-friendly.

Since 1979, Pacific Lutheran men's soccer teams have had 22 winnings seasons and won nearly 60 percent of their matches. The Lutes have won the Northwest Conference Championship in 1982 - 1983 - 1984 - 1985 - 1986 - 1987 - 1991 – 1992. The Lutes ar proven winners.

The Soccer Field is located on main campus. This natural grass field is home to the men’s and women’s soccer teams. Portable bleachers seat about 200 spectators. The field is south of the softball field and west of the track. Parking is available in the Olson Auditorium parking lot across from the softball field.

HOCKEY

We may not have Major League Hockey in Seattle, but we’ve got two great hockey teams to watch, The Seattle Thunderbirds and the Everett Silvertips—two teams made up of major leaguers in training. And if you haven’t been to a hockey game, I don’t mean watching it on TV, I mean sitting right there in the arena, hearing that puck ricochet of the glass, or watching the boards shake when a player is slam-checked into them. Right there when the gloves come off and players go to fist city… There is nothing like old time hockey to get the juices flowing—and that’s the way these kids play.

Take in a Seattle Thunderbirds or an Everett Silvertips hockey game. Watch these NHL hopefuls and future stars go at it on the ice. Cheer each shot on goal, or each save by the goalie; cringe at teeth rattling body checks into the boards. These kids are tough and they can play hockey, Sept thru late March.

CURLING

Do you know the difference between a spiel and a bonspiel? Curling cognoscenti do. A spiel is an informal curling match, while a bonspiel is a curling tournament.

But what the heck is curling, anyway? How to explain this arcane sport? Shuffleboard on ice or bocce sans balls, maybe? Played using big smooth rocks (equipped with handles) called “stones” and short, devilish brooms called “brushes?”

A bit off the beaten track, yes. No wonder: the game was invented in Scotland—something to do when the loch froze over. Two teams of four players each slide 40-pound round stones at a target (a 12 foot-wide circle called the “house”) located 138 feet down the ice. Meantime, teammates rapidly sweep their brushes on the ice in front of the moving stone to speed it up or slow it down, or make it curve this way or that. (Honest!) Object of the sport is to get closest to the house center. Blocking and knocking out opponents’ stones are important tactics of the sport (maybe the only ones). One reason curling is an ideal spectator sport: nobody ever gets lost with trick moves—there are none!

Teams (or "rinks" as they are called in curling) from the Granite Curling Club, founded 1961, have captured many national championships—more than any other club in the United States. But this facility is not just for world-caliber athletes; there are leagues for people of all skill levels and ages.

The curling season runs from mid-October until mid-April each year, hosting a number of leagues, many tournaments ("bonspiels"), and several open houses. Plenty of opportunities for you to come out and participate—compete or just watch the action. The GCC is the only dedicated curling facility on the west coast of United States.

Evergreen Speedway is located 25 miles northeast of Seattle, at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe

Much of the track's success can be attributed to its unique design, which combines a 5/8-mile paved outer oval with a 3/8-mile inner oval, a 1/5-mile oval, a 1/8-mile drag strip, and a figure-eight track. The unification of the five venues within view of the 7500-seat covered, and additional 7500-seat modular grandstands has created a flexible Motorsports arena offering racing fans a diverse choice.

The track hosts a variety of local and national races March to October, including NASCAR Elite Division Northwest Series events.

WOMEN'S TEAMS

Once up on a time not so long ago, the phrase “women’s sports” was limited to badminton, croquet, hopscotch and jump-rope. Swimming was included, as was a form of basketball where you dribbled (bounced) the ball only once.

Women simply were not allowed to turn out for contact sports. Football, boxing and wrestling were out of the question, unladylike. After all, the fairer sex were the future wives and mothers of our societies. Besides, who would go out to see a bunch of girls play football, or basketball for that matter. I mean, girls aren’t built to play sports. They can’t throw, they can’t run, they’re too slow, and far too weak to compete. So the litany went.

Well, let me tell you, things have changed. In Seattle we have one of the best pro basketball teams in the WNBA, the Seattle Storm (national champs in 2004). The Seattle Majestics, a women’s tackle football team, is unbeaten two years running in regular season play, The University of Washington fields basketball, volleyball, and softball teams that rank with the top teams in the nation. Seattle Pacific’s soccer team won the NCAA championship. All women.

If you haven’t got the picture yet—women’s sports is a big deal in Seattle. Don’t miss a chance to take in a game. Oh, and that business about girls not being tough enough to play contact sports? Spend a night watching the Rat City Rollergirls or the Jet City Roller Girls go at it, or catch a Seattle Majestic football game, then tell me that. Watch the Seattle Storm play, or The U of W softball team in action, and tell me girls can’t catch, throw or run. These gals may not be as big or as strong as their male counterparts, but they are just as much fun to watch.

The Lady Lutes of PLU have an impressive athletic history. In the first 15 years of the program, Pacific Lutheran women's soccer teams compiled a phenomenal 233-59-18 record (.781 winning percentage), appearing in five NAIA national tournaments, winning championships in 1988, 1989 and 1991, and finishing as runner-up in 1990 and 1992. Pacific Lutheran teams have won 10 Northwest Conference crowns since 1981.

Over the past 11 seasons, the Pacific Lutheran women’s basketball team has put together a total of seven campaigns with at least 20 wins.

In the past nine years, the Pacific Lutheran volleyball team has compiled four seasons with at least 20 wins, along the way winning Northwest Conference championships in 1999, 2004, 2006 and 2007. It's clear that the Pacific Lutheran volleyball program has a good thing going.

While an NAIA member, PLU’s softball team won national championships in 1988 and 1992 and finished as runner-up in 1990. In the past 21 years, the Lutes have won 16 Northwest Conference championships. Since joining NCAA Division III, PLU has advanced to five regional tournaments and played for the regional title on four occasions. In 2002, the Lutes tied an NCAA record with 34 consecutive wins, captured a regional title and advanced to the NCAA Division III national tournament, finishing fourth.

ROLLER DERBY

Remember Roller Derby? Many of you watched it on TV in the ‘50s, ‘60s, early ‘70s. Maybe you followed Roller Jam, 1997-2000? Or you saw the movie FIREBALL (Mickey Rooney) or KANSAS CITY BOMBER (Racquel Welch)?

Well, it is back…with a few changes. Oh, it is still full of rough-and-tumble. But it’s no longer staged and choreographed (a la pro “rassling” on skates). Nope, this Roller Derby is for real. One league actually reports shattered wrists, broken ankles, broken or jammed noses, broken tailbones, dislocated shoulders, concussions and numerous sprains, twists, and bruises. And guess what: it’s almost exclusively a women’s sport (doesn’t sound like the “weaker sex” endeavor to me).

If you like your entertainment fast and furious, you’re in luck. We have two—count ‘em—two Roller Derby leagues in the Greater Seattle area. And these girls aren’t paid to do this, they are all amateurs—they do it for the love of it. Go see them and join the fun!

The Rat City Roller Girls, Seattle's first and only all female flat track armature roller derby league. Named after an area in the south end of Seattle, the RCRG league came into being in April 2004. The league is comprised of about 80 member/owners and includes five teams, also colorfully named: Derby Liberation Front, Grave Danger, Throttle Rockets, Sock-it Wenches and a Travel Team. These teams participate in competitive roller derby bouts on a flat track in an amateur athletic season that lasts from February through October. This season, The Rat City Roller Girls have moved up town and are skating in Key Arena. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

The Jet City Rollergirls, Snohomish County's only all-female, flat track roller derby league is ready to kick off their second season Saturday, January 31st in the Seaview Gymnasium at Edmonds Community College.

Don't let the fishnets fool you, these women are fierce. There are five teams, Bombers, Camaro Harem, CarnEvil, Hula Honeys, Pink Pistols, all vying to become Jet City’s 2009 Champions. Don’t miss the action. And with skaters’ named Jude O'Chopp, Anna Mosity, Suzi 9MM, Black Dahlia, and Nasty Nikki Nightstick, that action promises to be some rough and tumble, knock-‘em-down and drag-‘em-out entertainment. Floor seating is for 18 and over only, due to the chance of getting a flying rollergirl in your lap!
